Contemporary Theatre Writing in the Caribbean

As its name implies, Écritures Théâtrales Contemporaines en Caraïbe (Etc. Caraïbe) is an organization in the Caribbean that pursues a mission similar to that of the CEAD. Its task is to assist playwrights and to promote and distribute their scripts. Its partnership with the CEAD provides festivalgoers with the opportunity to discover writing of varying hues in language that reflects a wide range of personal, cultural and musical horizons, demonstrating that a common language of theatre is alive and well in both the sunny Caribbean and the snowy north.

Winner of the first Concours d'écriture théâtrale francophone de la Caraïbe award, this often hilarious script grabs hold of the Shakespearean fable and transforms it into a powerful, disturbing farce about dictatorship and its perpetrators and victims. With the sea and the sun as backdrop, larger-than-life characters become small and weak when facing their destiny and the forces that they have set in motion, thanks to writing that furiously mingles different levels of language and pulverizes more than one cliché. The play conveys the pleasure the actress takes in writing for actors, and her delight in giving life to these intriguing voices.

Yes, a talking dog. His language is that of the men and women he observes and loves, despite their sordidness, despite their weakness. His language is also multifarious, a poetry born of his exposure to sounds that he recreates and makes his own, words that he borrows or accumulates with each new encounter. A dog is, as the saying goes, man's best friend, and Lagier's Creole dog is certainly an eloquent example of the compassion too often lacking in mankind. This is a text meant to be heard, to be experienced, one that will no doubt lodge in our human and thus paltry memory.

Le Complexe de Thénardier and Lettres à l'humanité

A man of the theatre whose work is piercing yet balanced, José Pliya is committed to supporting and developing writing in the Caribbean and has plied his trade far and wide. From the sensational negotiations at the heart of Complexe de Thénardier to the impassioned appeals of Lettres à l'humanité, he writes of exile and belonging, highlighting man's inadequate and/or immoderate struggles with his fellow men. The work of this actor, director, founder of a theatre festival and playwright is a gift that conveys with unwavering elegance the luminous beauty of the spoken word, and the intense sorrows of obscure humanity.

This is a co-presentation by the Théâtre français of the National Arts Centre of Canada and UBU theatre company.

 

 


Mexico — Montréal
For the past three years, the Centre des auteurs dramatiques (CEAD) has been working with the CENTRO CULTURAL HELÉNICO to promote Quebec and Mexican plays. This collaboration has led to six translations, four staged readings and one production. The project will conclude during the FTA with the French première of an absolutely delicious play that shatters folkloric perceptions of Mexico, allowing for an encounter of two distinct and magnificently theatrical styles of writing.

Las Chicas del 3.5" Floppies

The Mexican theatre milieu has affectionately shortened the playwright's name to Legom, a name that has become synonymous with vigorous writing that sublimates the sordid with relish, but without complacency. The plays of this writer named by the press as the "enfant terrible" of the Mexican stage have won several awards and captured the attention of audiences around the world. The two women fighting for their survival in Las Chicas del 3.5" Floppies are unnamed, yet their presence comes across with biting clarity and a tinge of tenderness. This is Geneviève Billette's second translation of a Mexican script, after Ximena Escalante's Phèdre et autres labyrinthes . This tart theatrical dish combines several different flavours, and has a distinctly unique taste.

Playwrights Guild of Canada

Montreal Manifesto:3rd Playwriting Conference and Annual General Meeting

Playwrights Guild of Canada is a national association which represents the interests of Canadian playwrights and promotes their work nationally and internationally. The Conference will consist of panels, workshops and readings, and the participants will re-examine the momentous Gaspé Manifesto, which was a call for introducing 50% Canadian content in theatres. The organizers of the Siminovitch Prize in Theatre will announce the top Canadian playwrights who have been nominated for the prestigious $100,000 prize in 2005. A call for applications will also be announced for a bilingual Master Class, led by previous Siminovitch winner Carole Fréchette and organized by the Siminovitch Committee, in conjunction with Playwrights Guild of Canada, Centre des auteurs dramatiques and Playwrights Workshop Montreal.

THEATRE ON FILM
 
On Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, theatre hooks up with film at the Salle Fernand-Seguin. This year the Cinémathèque québécoise is presenting a series of video archives inspired by some innovative and influential artists of contemporary theatre: Peter Brook, Ariane Mnouchkine, Patrice Chéreau, Deborah Warner and Fiona Shaw, and Julie Brochen.

Simon Brook [Fr., 2001, 72 min]

At age 76, director Peter Brook agreed for the first time to discuss his work with a special interviewer - his son Simon, who is with him throughout the film as this intimate portrait of the artist and the man unfolds. It was the first time Brook had agreed to be filmed in rehearsal with his actors.

D'APRÈS HENRY VI ET RICHARD III DE W. SHAKESPEARE

In 1998, Patrice Chéreau directed a Shakespeare workshop on Richard III with students at the Conservatoire national supérieur d'art dramatique, and Stéphane Metge was in attendance every day for two months. A brilliant interpreter of the script, Chéreau describes each situation in vibrant, almost matterof- course terms. He dives into the heart of the students' acting, prolonging their gestures, explaining the incongruity of a situation and helping them conceive and develop their characters.

Éric Darmon and Ariane Mnouchkine [Fr., 1996, 142 min]

Rehearsals of Molière's Tartuffe serve as the framework of this documentary, while also providing a dynamic look at the very essence of the word "theatre" for director Ariane Mnouchkine.

With Richard II , the tragedy of the demise of a young king who is the symbol of an aging power structure, Deborah Warner directed a performance that was a highlight of the 1995-96 theatre season in both France and England. The actress Fiona Shaw plays Richard II as a playful and fragile king facing the rise of the future Henry IV.

ONCLE VANIA

In the Russian countryside in the late 19th century, the elderly professor Serebryakov, a specialist in aesthetics, has settled into retirement with his young second wife Elana at the home of his deceased first wife. Julie Brochen directs this play by Anton Chekhov, presented at the Théâtre de l'Aquarium in 2003. Jean-Baptiste Mathieu has created a hybrid televisual object that hovers somewhere between theatre and cinema and that plunges the spectator into the very heart of the story.

THE TRAGEDY OF HAMLET

With Adrian Lester, Scott Handy, Natasha Parry

This adaptation of Hamlet is by a specialist of the Shakespearian repertoire, Peter Brook. Directing both the stage presentation and this film version for the ARTE network, Brook has created one of his most accomplished works, initially shown in 2000 at the Théâtre des Bouffes du Nord. This stripped-down version relies on precise direction of the actors and is centred on Adrian Lester's very moving performance.

 

 

STUDENT PROGRAM
 
Both an introduction and a guide to the art of theatre, the Initiation à la création contemporaine d'ici et d'ailleurs project, carried out in association with Théâtre Denise-Pelletier, is designed to raise awareness about contemporary theatre among high school students and to stimulate discussion with regard to its integration into the curriculum. After a year of preparation within a pedagogical framework under the guidance of Gilles-Philippe Pelletier, 110 Grade 10 and 11 students and their teachers will attend the 11th Festival de théâtre des Amériques from May 27 to 30 to discover new voices of contemporary theatre and to meet with theatre artists, as well as other young people who share their passion for the stage. These schools with a theatrical bent are Camille-Lavoie secondary school in Alma, St. Louis high school in Montreal, Hormisdas-Gamelin in Gatineau, D'Iberville Secondary in Rouyn-Noranda and Des Patriotes in Beauharnois. Since 2001 many young people have been eager participants in this stimulating experience and have proved to be keen to share it with others, singing the praises of theatre upon their return to their home communities.

This project has been made possible thanks to financial support from la direction des programmes nationaux du ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec , in conjunction with the Admission ticket network. We also wish to thank Autobus Maheux and the firm Tembec (Rouyn-Noranda), as well as the City of Gatineau.

FOREIGN DELEGATIONS OF YOUNG THEATRE PROFESSIONALS
 
FRANCE
For the third time, the Office franco-québécois pour la jeunesse ( OFQJ) is assembling a delegation of young theatre directors, playwrights and administrators. Joining the French group for the first time will be young Francophone theatre professionals from across Europe, selected in association with the European network TEOREM.

The goal is to enable young French professionals to learn about the theatre milieu and the diversity of North American theatre. They can thus discover the richness and originality of contemporary Quebec playwrighting, and observe the workings and management practices of local theatre presentation. They will have the opportunity to make contacts in the profession and thus initiate cooperative ventures that pursue a shared objective. The 2001 edition resulted in the collective Transatlantik-Théâtre, which is composed of young theatre professionals (playwrights, directors, actors and administrators). Its aim is to promote contemporary stage plays on both sides of the Atlantic by means of staged readings in France of works by Quebec writers, and readings in Quebec of works by French playwrights.

 

 

 

 
FRENCH-SPEAKING BELGIUM
For the second time, the Agence Québec Wallonie Bruxelles pour la jeunesse (AQWBJ) is proud to join forces with the FTA so as to enable young Frenchspeaking Belgian theatre artists to take advantage of a unique opportunity to discover the Quebec theatre world. In association with the FTA, the AQWBJ has set up a 10-day series of arts activities that will see them attending several performances of FTA shows, in addition to meeting various professionals from the Quebec theatre milieu. We hope that this initial contact with our theatre artists will inspire them to pursue this spirit of cooperation, and will help establish networks of dynamic exchange between Quebec and Wallonia-Brussels. MEXICO
The Mexican delegation of young performing arts professionals includes actors, directors and writers eager to learn new theatre methods and techniques that differ from their own. This experience will certainly enrich our artistic and cultural vision, as it is a significant opportunity to establish a dialogue with several countries and to understand how they conceive, produce and indeed live theatre. This is a magnificent way to bring regions together by means of theatre.

The presence of young Mexican artists at the FTA is the consequence of an ongoing exchange established in 2003 between the Office Québec-Amériques pour la Jeunesse (OQAJ) and the Ministry of Culture in Colima (Secretaría de Cultura de Colima). The two organizations then signed an agreement in 2004. Other institutions such as the National Fund for Culture and the Arts (FONCA) have also helped reinforce the links between Quebec and Mexico. At the moment, a co-production between Colima and Quebec is underway.
