Actors Unleashed — In 1773 the philosopher and writer Denis Diderot wrote that “ Extreme sensibility (emotional involvement) makes for mediocre actors. Mediocre sensibility makes for bad actors. An utter lack of sensibility prepares actors for the sublime ”. Some two hundred years later, Van den Eede, De Schrijver and De Koning, decked out in powdered wigs, have fun putting his theories about theatrical illusion to the test of performance. Amidst a fantastically cluttered junk shop of a set, they charge forth with a playful demonstration of theatrical know-how and a brilliant reflection on theatre and its alluring mystery. All three actors come from influential Flemish and Dutch theatre collectives. They cover all aspects of performance, going out of their way to unveil the secrets of the actor and his paradox. Stand aside, Diderot!

Black Sun, Red Moon — With the passion of youth, the gifted and radical Hungarian director Árpád Schilling takes furious possession of Georg Büchner’s enigmatic and unfinished masterpiece, a play whose critique of society is still strikingly relevant. Woyzeck, a man of flesh and blood, is the anti-hero of a contemporary tragedy. As they enter the space, the audience encircles a steel cage. Its floor is covered in sand, and the characters imprisoned within are reduced to a wild state. This cruel sideshow of exploitation, treason, manipulation and humiliation is electrified by the presence of live musicians. During this merciless combat the actors, with great physical prowess, embody the political and social message of Woyzeck, its dialogue punctuated by the subversive poetry of Attila József.

X-ray of an Armistice — Going off to war is one thing. Coming back home is something else entirely. With the worst apparently behind him, a soldier reported missing returns home to find his wife and children amid the ruins. Nothing is as it was. Two years of hardship, humiliation and terror, under siege or as combatants, have eroded all trace of humanity, and the man’s sudden appearance is troublesome. Considered to be the greatest Swedish playwright since Strindberg, Lars Norén has written and directed this tale of a family destroyed by a modern conflict, one where your neighbour, companion or former friend becomes your torturer or executioner. Through the filter of repressed emotions and intimate wounds, he probes the state of a world torn apart by war.

Oh God! — Psychoanalysis, group therapy, prayer, meditation – this latest piece from a multi-talented Toronto duo deals with existential and spiritual issues in unexpected fashion. From multiple points of view, three good angel/ bad angel actors toy with our innermost certainties in a shifting world that hovers between fiction and reality. Nadia Ross and Jacob Wren, with their distinctive artistic sensibilities and convictions, share in a melding of their experiences a formidable synergy. Over the past decade they have been exploring with theatre audiences this shared space, one that is home to both common ground and conflict.
