Theatre of power
As seductive as vice and as free as Molière’s Don Juan, who fears neither God nor the devil, this is a dark and fascinating Richard III. Through the excess and the monstrous actions of this hideous toad, Shakespeare helps us understand human behaviour, directing our gaze toward the victims of power, be they in Bosnia, Palestine, Iraq or Colombia. This is brought into focus by the dazzling theatre artists Heidi and Rolf Abderhalden, who live in a country undergoing total collapse and who experience defeat and destruction on a daily basis. This reworking of Shakespeare’s classic has been transposed into the blood-soaked mass grave of history. Their ceremonial Ricardo III reveals the many faces of this tyrant lusting for power, and the masks of hypocrisy he wears to achieve his goals. This “ ancient ” text is frightfully contemporary.

In a tone of address that is generous yet merciless, Heidi Abderhalden and her group of actors tear off their gloomy masks to evoke the scars of beings wild with blood and armed for the most heinous madness.

Mapa Teatro
Led by Rolf and Heidi (playwrights, directors, actors) and costumer designer Élizabeth Abderhalden Cortès, Mapo Teatro has become the most important theatre company in Colombia. With their extensive training in the arts and considerable experience acquired on the stages of Europe, the trio has managed to impose a new theatrical concept that goes beyond usual stage conventions. They quickly established a reputation for their interpretations of the works of Samuel Beckett, Heiner Müller (including a play presented by inmates of Colombia’s main penitentiary), Gabriel Garcia Marquez (with a Hindu company) and Jules Cortazar. To celebrate their 15th anniversary and the inauguration of a new home for their theatre, Mapa Theatro mounted Ricardo III in August 2000, a decidedly contemporary presentation that reflects their artistic progression to date.

Each of their extensively researched projects celebrates the ephemeral nature of theatre, an act of creation that is endless renewable because it is so intrinsically human.
