A Theatrical Rhapsody
A formidable manipulator of fictions, Marcelle Hudon takes an intimate approach to material and motifs from a larger-than-life stage. In this theatre of shadows, a video camera records, defines and restructures the movements and actions of tiny puppets, characters cut out of paper or drawn from history books, closely following their progress in intertwining tales as though we were in a late-night dream or had taken leave of our senses. While the puppeteers crank the mechanisms of this theatre of objects, light and images exposed to all in plain view, the musicians weave soundscapes and embroider threads of silence. At the very source of this poetic rapture is a white shark listening attentively to the stories of humans of all ages who recount their heady memories, recent dreams and real or imagined heroes.

Marcelle Hudon
Montreal artist Marcelle Hudon started off her career as a puppeteer working on popular childrens television shows (À plein temps and Passe-Partout). She then collaborated on several highly inventive pieces as writer, designer, puppeteer and director integrating puppets into choreography, performance art and contemporary music concerts. In her work she explores the relationship between the puppet and the puppeteer, as well as the various forms of communication the puppet represents. A multi-talented artist who is equally at home in visual art, theatre, circus skills, song, video, dance, mask work and shadow theatre, she has enjoyed a number of fruitful artistic partnerships, particularly with choreographer Carole Bergeron, set designer Louis Hudon and musicians Maxime Rioux and Paul Joffe. After studying in Italy, France and Germany, she is currently pursuing artistic research that includes puppet theatre scrims, robot puppets and shadow games.
Nouvelles Scènes
In 1997, the Festival de théâtre des Amériques created the Nouvelle Scène series, whose mission four editions later remains the same to promote young artists in order to actively contribute to the emergence of new voices in the theatre by providing them with conditions that favour their discovery and advancement. In bringing together this year a generation of multidisciplinary artists, Nouvelles Scènes 2003 reasserts the dynamism and plurality of contemporary theatre in Quebec. In choosing unusual performance sites and forms that include performance art, theatrical walkabouts and staged installations, these artists challenge the norms of theatrical representation and the role of the spectator, questioning the social and political role of art and its place in the community.
