A programme of short video works by Tim Etchells, artistic director of Forced Entertainment including collaborations with the company’s long-term photographer Hugo Glendinning and composer John Avery. From the hilarious anti-Hollywood of Starfucker to the poignant confessional of Downtime Tim Etchells’ video works explore the connections between image, language and imagination asking the viewer to re-think their relationship to unfolding of narratives on screen. Refreshingly simple and revealing in equal amounts the works bring the aesthetic of Forced Entertainment’s live work into a new arena and exploit the capacity of video to both capture and create unrepeatable and enigmatic events.

Word maestro, Claude Gauvreau, appears to us in full possession of his lyric expression. Beginning with Nuit de la poésie, he recites some of his poems — largely extracts from his famous Charge de l’orignal épormyable — finally, he agrees to certain interviews and a strong and engaging character is revealed. It is a moving portrait of a poet who is perhaps not far from becoming a legend.

The uranium used in the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 came from a secret mine in Canada’s North-West Territories. Not far from that mine, in the village of Deline, the Sahtu Dene people have paid a heavy price for their forced participation in World War II: radiation poisoning has decimated the town’s male population who had to transport the uranium ore on their backs. This is the testimony of the descendants of these people.

A unique " portrait confession " where renowned French writer, Marguerite Duras, is full screen. Luce Perrot chose to let Marguerite Duras express herself, from time to time guiding her in the labyrinth of her thoughts and her contradictions. The result is an astonishing monologue, a spontaneous spoken version of writing, illustrated by Duras’s surroundings.

MEXICO — MONTRÉAL
At the invitation of the Festival de théâtre des Amériques, the CEAD is presenting the French-language North American première of two Mexican plays translated by Quebec authors, in staged readings. The series starts on Thursday, June 5, 2003 at 4 p.m. with Opción Múltiple by Luis Mario Moncada Gil, in a translation by Suzanne Lebeau and a staged reading directed by Mauricio García Lozano. This is followed at 6 p.m. by Fedra y otras griegas by Ximena Escalante, in a translation by Geneviève Billette and a staged reading directed by Alice Ronfard.

Luis Mario Moncada Gil has written over twenty plays, most of which have been produced in Mexico. The director of the Centro Cultural Helénico, he has also written articles for several publications and is a member of the Teatro de Arena company, which has presented plays in several different countries. With Opción múltiple, he takes the audience into the disconcerting yet playful whirlwind of the inner voices of Diana, a young woman who suffers from personality disorders. The translation is by a seasoned writer who knows Mexico well, Suzanne Lebeau.

As for Ximena Escalante, she was born in Mexico in 1964. A playwright, director and journalist, she studied in Mexico and also in Spain. Her play Fedra y otras griegas was produced at the El Granero theatre in Mexico City in 2002. This latter-day reworking of the myth of Phaedra explores the lesser-known chapters of the life of Phaedra, while also allowing for a unique, incisive incursion into the feminine imagination, a universe that well becomes Geneviève Billette, who is translating for the first time.

• Initiation to Contemporary Theatre Student Program
The Initiation à la création contemporaine d’ici et d’ailleurs project came into being during the FTA in 2001 as an effort to build national and international bridges between schools and contemporary theatre, allowing high school students to experience the Festival and its exceptional artistic and human exchange of views. This artistic program, designed to expose young people to contemporary theatre and stimulate reflection on how to integrate theatre into the educational curriculum, has been a remarkable success on the pedagogical and artistic levels, meeting the expectations of all partners and participants.

In order to maintain continuity and program development, the Festival de théâtre des Amériques is joining forces for this second edition with Théâtre Denise-Pelletier, an institution recognized for its extensive knowledge of the Quebec school milieu and for its considerable expertise in presenting theatre to an adolescent audience. From May 28 to June 1, some 145 students from high schools across Quebec (Armand-Corbeil in Terrebonne, Polyvalente de Paspébiac, Manikoutai school in Sept-Îles, La Poudrière in Drummondville, Polyvalente Saint-Joseph in Mont-Laurier, De Rochebelle in Quebec City and Villa Sainte-Marcelline in Montreal) will take part in the project, accompanied by their teachers. The program includes meetings with artists, lectures, inter-regional exchanges, visits to theatres, etc. The pedagogical structure is being organized by Josée St-Pierre, a teacher who has developed a drama teaching course that focuses on encouraging and developing the intelligence and artistic sensitivity of adolescents.

This project is made possible thanks to the financial participation of the Ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec (Section 3 of the Rencontres culture-éducation program), as well as support from Via Rail Canada, Limocar and Orléans Express.

• The ATFC (Association des théâtres francophones du Canada) convention
The Association des théâtres francophones du Canada (ATFC) was founded in 1984 in response to the need to create a national platform that addresses the specific concerns of French-language theatres outside Quebec. The ATFC currently consists of 14 professional companies in 6 provinces that present and promote original French-language plays on the local, regional, national and international level. For the ATFC, creating partnerships is the key to carrying out its many different activities, which include a regional theatre festival, theatre workshops, the Agenda des théâtres francophones, the foundation for the advancement of French-language theatre in Canada, the Masque de la Production franco-canadienne and celebrations marking World Theatre Day. The ATFC is proud to be associated with the Festival de théâtre des Amériques, and to take advantage of this major event to hold its 19th annual general meeting in Montreal on May 30 and June 1.

• 2nd Delegation of Young French Theatre Professionals organized by the Office Franco-Québécois pour la Jeunesse from May 24 to June 1
In 2001, the OFQJ participated in the Festival de théâtre des Amériques by assembling a delegation of young theatre professionals ­ directors, playwrights and theatre administrators. After the Festival, the "Transatlantik-Théâtre" working group was set up, which led to the establishment of a reading committee that works in liaison with the CEAD (playwrights’ workshop). Given the high level of interest generated by the first venture, the OFQJ is renewing its participation and is setting up a new delegation.
The objective is to enable young French professionals to attend the Festival, a major event in Montreal, in order to learn about the theatre milieu and the diversity of North American theatre. They can thus discover the richness and originality of contemporary Quebec playwrighting, and observe the workings and management practices of theatre presentation in Quebec.
By taking part in this event and in get-togethers organized to coincide with the Festival, they will have the opportunity to make contacts in the profession and thus initiate cooperative ventures that pursue a shared objective.

• Delegation of young Belgian theatre professionals organized by the Agence Québec Wallonie-Bruxelles pour la jeunesse from May 25 to June 3.
The Agence Québec Wallonie Bruxelles pour la jeunesse (AQWBJ) is financed by both the Quebec government and the Wallonie-Brussels government. Since 1984, some 14,000 young French-speaking Belgians and Quebecers aged 18 to 30 have been supported by our organization. The Agence is financing the attendance of a dozen young Belgian theatre professionals as part of the 2003 edition of the Festival du Théâtre des Amériques (FTA). Directors, playwrights, theatre administrators, presenters and journalists will thus be able to discover the Quebec theatre scene. In conjunction with the FTA, the AQWBJ has organized a 10-day schedule of events that will enable them to attend several Quebec performances. In addition, a series of get-togethers will allow them to meet with Quebec theatre professionals.
