Nothing stopped this woman from writing, neither bombs nor jackboots. For her, literature had nothing to do with stylistic composition. Literature was life itself.

Tribune de Genève, 2001

By Agota Kristof
Adaptation/Directed by De Onderneming

From the novel to the stage, Agota Kristof’s cynical and merciless masterpiece packs a wallop. The backdrop is the war, the bombing, the atrocities, the hardships. On a sparsely furnished stage, Klaus et Lucas, in a perfect fusion of body and mind, train themselves to become insensitized in order to survive the ambient cruelty. Lacking any sense of morality, they make daily entries into a notebook, detailing the progress of their training and listing their transgressions until the inevitable separation occurs. This overwhelming and playful adaptation of the first part of the celebrated “trilogy of twins” by the actors of the Flemish collective De Onderneming (The Enterprise), conveys with remarkable sensitivity the terrifying reality of the novel.
