Frank Castorf demonstrates once again that he is a fiendishly intelligent and remarkable director of actors.

Le Monde, 2001

An adaptation of Tennessee Williams’ A Streetcar Named Desire
Directed by Frank Castorf
coproduction Salzburger Festspiele

A BLAST OF REVOLT FROM BERLIN
Under the pen and clinical gaze of the subversive director Frank Castorf, A Streetcar Named Desire now stops at the end of the line for the American dream. Everyone off! Out with the movie myth! All that remains are a structure and the characters. Stanley, a former Solidarnosc activist, earns his living writing copy for chewing gum ads. His marriage to Stella is crumbling under mediocre comforts until the arrival of Blanche, and thus of scandal. In this furiously paced, rock’n roll-like performance, illusion, disenchantment, depression and decadence all converge. Drawing freely from the play by Tennessee Williams, Castorf acts as a fierce seismograph recording the tremors of society.
