In the Congo, people like to get swept away by music, particularly Ndombolo, a free-wheeling hybrid music, big with traditional rhythms in a blend of rumba, pop and funk. This wall of sound has the Congolese up and dancing, making them forget for a moment their poverty, masking it with sequins and lights that all disappear by morning. Challenging an attitude of fatalism, the dancer and choreographer Faustin Linyekula, a major star on the international stage, inserts into the spirit of Ndombolo a hefty dose of punk rage and irresistible energy. To the seething poems of Antoine Vumilia Muhindo, a political prisoner in Kinshasa, he makes dance boil over into trance, creating a galvanizing choreographic concert. The musical director is Flamme Kapaya, an exceptional guitarist and a huge star in the Congo, whose playing brings to mind Hendrix or the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Three dancers – including Linyekula, fascinating and as slippery as an eel – three musicians and two singers, all devil-may-care, all with rage in their hearts, sweating blood for a better future.
