Cast and audience are enclosed together in the same secret space where decryption specialists listen to telephone and computer conversations from all over the world. A voice emerges, proclaiming the arrival of “gasping time” and stating “Parricides over here”. Is the voice somehow linked to the imminent terrorist attack that threatens eight big cities? And is the suicide of one of the code breakers a lead worth following? The fourth part of Wajdi Mouawad’s quartet Le Sang des promesses, Ciels is also its counterpoint. Where Littoral, Incendies and Forêts brought the spectators into the maze of a past where ancient myths shed light on the characters’ quests, Ciels plunges us into a present that is constantly repeating itself, like the proverbial broken record, but at warp speed. In full mastery of his art, the playwright and director confines us in a microcosm of our world and, by means of a suspenseful narrative recounted by actors walking a veritable tightrope of risk, makes us aware of our profound powerlessness in the face of the violence and catastrophes we have created.

Ciels
Wajdi Mouawad

Since graduating from the National Theatre School of Canada, Wajdi Mouawad has been pursuing a four-pronged career as an actor, playwright, director and producer, sometimes assuming all four duties in the same piece, as was the case for Willy Protagoras enfermĂ© dans les toilettes (1998), produced like most of his previous plays by Théâtre Ă” Parleur, which he founded with Isabelle Leblanc. In 2000 he was appointed artistic director of Théâtre de Quat’ Sous, where he mounted a memorable Trainspotting (1998). In 2005 he and Emmanuel Schwartz established AbĂ© CarrĂ© CĂ© CarrĂ© in Montreal, while in France he created the Au CarrĂ© de l’HypotĂ©nuse company. Working with these two companies on both sides of the Atlantic, he created ForĂŞts in 2006 and the solo piece Seuls in 2008. In 2007 he succeeded Denis Marleau as head of the Théâtre français at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa. In the summer of 2009 he was a guest artist at the 63rd edition of the Avignon Festival, mounting for the occasion the entire Sang des promesses cycle, with the first three parts featured in nightlong presentations at the Popes’ Palace. He is currently working on a presentation of all of Sophocles’ tragedies, in a new translation by Robert Davreu.

Press Quote(s)

Le Soleil, 2009
